Camping Readiness Checklist

These are the basic Camp Readiness indicators for Girl Scout troop camping. Each Scout's Troop and family should go through this inventory to help a girl prepare for camping.


Emotional Readiness

Physical Readiness

  • Has stamina, doesn't tire quickly.
  • Is strong enough to carry own belongings, buckets full of water, pot of food, arm load of wood, etc.
  • Has strength and coordination needed for planned activities, can sweep and mop a floor, hike "the mile," move tables and chairs, etc.

Has necessary skills, knowledge to:

  • Can plan a simple trip, including making all preparations and shopping for supplies (for older girls).
  • Can read and follow a recipe or a kaper chart.
  • Can use kitchen implements
    • hand operated can opener
    • grater/peeler
    • paring knife
  • Can wash dishes, wipe clean a kitchen/cooking area, and store food properly.
  • Build a fire, and/or can cook on stove with adult supervision.
  • Make a bed (roll up a sleeping bag on her own).
  • Clean a toilet.
  • Can sweep a floor.
  • Operate a flashlight, camera, etc.

Has experience, proven ability to:

  • Follow orders/instructions satisfactorily.
  • Has previously participated in day trips and cookouts.
  • Can be expected to accomplish camp jobs usually found on a kaper chart.
  • Pack and re-pack her belongings and keep track of them.
  • Can make good judgement calls when dressing for the weather.
  • Understands and follows the buddy system.
  • Can be depended on to make good choices with regards to own and others safety.
  • Can remember to "Touch the Earth lightly" when visiting outdoors.
