Brownie Troop 28 and Junior Troop 150 undertook a grand project this fall: a Badge and Try It Earning/Service Project/Fundraiser. The Brownies wanted to earn the Careers Try-It and as part of it, decided to have a one day sale with two Troop moms who participate every year in the Ames Park and Rec Craft Fair. The Juniors worked on the Sew Simple and Art to Wear badge. With approval from Council for a money- making project, the girls began planning to make fleece hats designed by Leader Melissa Murray. Each girl brought one to two yards or some fleece left over from previous projects and we were off. The girls got to make patterns, cut, sew, finish and prepare the hats for the sale. In one afternoon and evening, the girls made nearly 80 hats, including hats of their own.
At the sale, the girls took turns staffing the booth and helping customers. The girls also decided to give people the option of buying a hat to donate to a local elementary school. The girls will be delivering more than 40 hats to the various elementary schools in Ames to keep children in need warm this winter! I have also heard that several of them took their new skills home and are making holiday presents for friends and family members!
