Winter Camp Out: Junior Troop 150 and 955, plus Brownie Troop 28,
February 6-8 at Rainbow Lodge, Camp Sac.
Camping Together Badge:
The girls planned all their meals for the camp out and decided which badges they'd like to work on. They made a list of things to pack for the event, and what they needed in the way of first aid materials. When the weekend was done, they also talked about what they liked best about the experience ("EVERYTHING!") and whether they might like to go camping again ("YES!").
Meals:
Our Kaper Chart divided girls into three groups (the 3Ms plus 1, the JOMs, and the Cookie Monsters). They rotated jobs for each meal, setting the tables, cooking the food and cleaning up afterwards – they all did a great job and the meals were quite tasty!
Frosty Fun Badge:
Leader Melissa Murray taught the girls about hypothermia and protecting themselves in cold weather. They put together winter survival kits and experimented with Crisco to see how insulation (blubber) retains body heat in cold water. They hiked through the woods identifying animal tracks in the snow – including rarely seen "scout" and "leader" tracks! They also created snow creatures and "painted" them with colored water.
Theater Badge work:
Indoors, leader Martha Stewart led the girls in constructed their own masks and talking about acting and creating characters. The girls discussed how to construct a story and how to listen to everyone's ideas, and presented their own skits. They had a blast, but unfortunately we didn't witness any Tony Award winners!
Memorable Moments:
Who can forget the burning pizza and smoke-filled kitchen on Friday night? And what about all the mud puddles and wet socks? Oh yes, and the highlight of Saturday night, a spontaneous conga line that snaked through the lodge for several minutes as the girls chanted, "We are fer-ti-li-zer!"
